This January Tom Van Zegeren celebrated his 10-year anniversary with VK Civil. Tom’s journey with the company began in 2015, but his legacy in the construction industry began in 1974, exemplifying decades of hard work, leadership, and dedication.

As a kid, Tom loved being outdoors, a passion that led him to a career as a pipe layer and later a foreman. He spent the majority of his career at Bond Construction where he solidified his reputation as a knowledgeable and skilled leader. One memorable project involved a 90” storm sewer installation in Grand Rapids, where Tom led the crew through a difficult, tight jobsite. Despite the high stakes—working 20 feet deep, alongside multiple utilities, and dealing with frustrated homeowners—Tom thrived under pressure and liked the challenge. His ability to remain calm and focused during the most stressful tasks earned him the respect of many.

Tom was the foreman on one of the first construction sites Nate Vriesman visited just out of college. A little over a decade later, on another job site, Tom expressed interest to Nate in becoming a construction observer for VK Civil.

VK Civil is very careful when hiring former contractors for this role, but Tom’s strong moral character and proven excellence left VK Civil with no hesitation. With his vast experience Tom is assigned to VK Civil’s toughest projects and to aid the least experienced project foremen. He has saved many a contractor and owner consternation and headaches with his wisdom and foresight. Many of them have asked to hire Tom, offering a lucrative salary and shiny new truck. To date, thankfully, he has politely turned them down because he enjoys being part of the VK Civil team.

Tom’s influence extends far beyond what’s on the job description, and his support and advice have helped others succeed in their roles. VK Civil’s engineers often ask his advice on how to solve tricky construction problems during design, and part of VK Civil’s training regimen for new construction observers includes spending time on the job with Tom.

As Tom celebrates his 10-year anniversary at VK Civil, we recognize the countless contributions he has made to the team and the industry.
