Fun Under the Sun: Caledonia’s Community Green Park Welcomes Splash Pad

June 2 was the grand opening of the splash pad at Caledonia’s Community Green Park. Bringing the community together in celebration, marking the beginning of a summer filled with laughter and cherished moments for all who visit. VK Civil was delighted to partner with EV Construction to add the splash pad to the park’s array of recreational offerings. This intentionally low-key design was built to fit within a natural park setting and the inclusive space allows residents of all ages to beat the summer heat while fostering community bonding and well-being. Plan your visit to the splash pad at [...]

Two New Additions to the VK Civil Private Development Team

I (Dan) was tempted to make the title “VK Civil Grows in Height and Capacity”.  We recently added two new team members to our private development team. They happen to be the tallest members in the private development team picture below. Collin Wilson joins us as an EIT (Engineer in Training) with 3 years of experience in private development design. Josh Renkema joins us as a CAD operator. Their experience, skills, and commitment to excellence align seamlessly with our vision. The private development team also includes engineers Colin Finch, Zach Boeve, Aaron Van Proyen, and Dan Lewis as well [...]

VK Civil Partners with Replanted

In 2022 there were 10,500 kids served in Michigan's foster care service, and only 5000 licensed foster homes.  Roughly 50% of the children who enter foster care are able to go back to their biological families, while the other half need adoptive placements.  Local adoptive and foster parents need support as they struggle to meet the complex needs created by the grief, loss, and trauma experienced by the children in their care.  Lack of support leads to family distress and disrupted placements, ultimately hurting both families and children. Last month, VK Civil partnered with Replanted Grand Rapids to fill the support gap and [...]

Niles High School Sports & Competition Field Ribbon Cutting

VK Civil recently had the privilege of attending the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Viking Stadium at Niles High School. VK was hired by CARMI Design Group to assist with the civil engineering design of a new track and artificial turf football field. The project turned out great and the first sporting event happened on the field right after the celebration. Congrats to Niles on your new track and field!

VK Civil Christmas in October

Yes, you read the headline correctly. Our team Christmas party was in October!! Spouses and family members joined our team for an evening of paint pouring and tacos. Some of the engineers fixated on how to exactly mix paint and water to get the ideal pouring consistency, while everyone experimented with color combinations and techniques. VK Civil seeks to plan ahead and be prepared through weekly leadership meetings, quarterly planning meetings, and constant communication. If you are looking for a great environment where the team enjoys working and playing together, give us a call and let’s start a conversation! [...]

AIA Presentation – Civil Engineering Site Selection Considerations

Dan Lewis had the pleasure of presenting “Civil Engineering Site Selection Considerations” to the American Institute of Architect’s Southwest Michigan Branch recently. Custer hosted the presentation from their beautiful offices on the 15th Floor of the Exchange Building in downtown Kalamazoo.  The views were awesome! If your architectural firm would like more information on this subject, we are happy to come to your office and present directly to your staff. These presentations are eligible for 1 hour of educational credit.  Just contact Dan Lewis at dan@vkcivil.com to set something up.

Ice Cream Trucks, Magic & Near Death Experiences

“I’m not stopping!!!” Unsuspecting riders were in for a huge scare if they hadn’t seen others ride the zipline before them at the VK Civil Family Picnic. Hurdling down at breakneck speeds directly toward a tree with no slowing down until just before impact caused excitement for some while others bailed early to save their lives! For those not a fan of ziplines, the magic show and ice cream truck were just the thing for kids and adults alike. The food, yard games, great conversations and a fun evening were had by all. Looking for a great environment where [...]

APWA Rod Korhorn Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing

The American Public Works Association (APWA) Midwest Michigan Branch held another very successful golf outing on Wednesday July 20, 2022. Thirty two teams participated, the weather was beautiful, and fun was had by all. The event funds the Rod Korhorn Memorial Scholarship that the Midwest Branch gives to a child of a Branch member pursuing an education in Engineering or a Public Works related field. Rod served on the Midwest Branch board before his passing in 2014. Vriesman & Korhorn extends our sincere thanks to Midwest Branch for helping to keep Rod’s memory alive and to those who participated [...]
