Kenowa Trail
PROJECT PROFILE
Clients: Georgetown Charter, Jamestown Charter and Byron Townships
Estimated Project Cost: $1,200,000
The project was awarded an MDOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant that will cover 80% of the construction cost, and construction is scheduled for 2017.
Vriesman & Korhorn was contacted to pursue grant funding to construct a non-motorized path from 56thStreet (Barry) to 68th Street (Quincy) that would complete the connection of the extensive but separate trail networks in Kent County and Ottawa County. When complete, trails will connect from throughout Kent County to Lake Michigan. Vriesman & Korhorn was able to assemble a coalition of 3 Townships to support the local match and pay for engineering services for this project, garner support from Kent and Ottawa Counties and local State lawmakers, and put together a grant application.
Unique challenges
This project included minimizing wetland impacts, utilizing the shoulder of the existing bridge over the M-6 highway, and working within the jurisdiction of 3 Townships, 1 City, 2 Counties, MDOT and the MDEQ.
